By Stephan Schwebke
They only display a handful of the 108 PIDS that are read; there is virtually no information as to how to interpret the readings; the MAF reading is in lbs/min while the information Alldata gives is in volts. You only get what you pay for, so if you're looking for something better than a code-reader, this is it and not much more.

"Actron Scanner is easy to use" 2010-03-18
By Corlen R. Charnell
For a long time I didnt think they made any new scanners that worked with the original ALDL OBD1 computers. I actually purchased a special Serial cable set up and tried some "free" software for my laptop, but quickly discovered that's not nearly as practical as this simple portable unit. After reading some reviews I made the purchase and was delighted when it was just as easy as plugging in and selecting the year, make and model of the car. I really like the ability to create a short list of things you need to view, and only wish there was a way to save them so I dont have to create the list each time. Other than that, this was exactly as advertised and it really made setting the TPS a snap compared to using the voltmeter and jumper wires.

I know computers and the web access program for updates will not load on Windows 7, 64-Bit... I have made a mistake and should not have made such a large investment. Would not have if I knew this in advance. I have sent Actron e-mail requesting information on updates for Windows 7. No reply yet. will update this feed back if I get a fix. if not I have no choice but to return this back to Amazon. My loss, I really needed this tool in my world. I got a reply from them and the just of it was Ya, We know there is a problem with 64 bit operation. and we are looking into it. There is no deliver date form the tech people. I am using it with out updates. not sure if it is work right.

Some thing does not seem right on all the feedback I read, if I am not mistaken at least the first two feedbacks sound like they are posted by the seller. I am permenant shopper on amazon and I susually read comments and feedbacks from other customers before I will make big mistake.

I saw diffrent model and brand which seems very interesting but it sounds it can help only with GM,Ford and Chevrolet cars, here are list of cars my family and I own, 2001, VW Jetta VR6, 2001, chrysler PT Cruisser LTD. 2004 Mercedes Benz S600, and 2006 Toyota RAV4, if this machine can not work for all the above vehicles for me it has no value since I don't want to buy 4 different one for 4 diffrent vehicle.

The one I am really interested in is Equus 3150 Innova ABS + Professional CanOBD2 Diagnostic Code Scanner for OBDII Vehicles, but I want to know more about it specially if it will work for any vehicle, I am ready to buy it.

Please can someone e-mail me let me know for what kind of more vehicles it works better beside GM,Ford and chevy?

Thanks.

I say Ha! to the repair shop that offered me a 75.00 fee to put my brother`s car in their machine to diagnose a check engine light. With this tool and a service manual I found a small vacuum leak that put the check engine light. A worth wild investment and easy to use. As long as there are computers in vehicles I would never be without one.

If you have an older vehicle and you even use this once, you've gotten your money's worth. I have used this scanner on both of my vehicles and have saved a lot of money from not needing autoshop diagnostic testing because this unit has been quite accurate in pinpointing problems which I have repaired myself. I have had this for a few years now, so you may look for a newer model, but Actron is the way to go.

When your "Check Engine" light comes on, the Black & Decker AD950 self-diagnostic tool displays the same information stored in a car’s computer that a mechanic uses to diagnose and fix problems. When the "Check Engine" light comes on, for cars manufactured after 1995, insert the SmartScan in the OBDII port near the steering wheel column. The easy-to-read LED screen displays the fault code – the same information a mechanic will see – for why the "Check Engine" light illuminated. The SmartScan is sold with a reference manual of the fault codes which easily stores in the glove compartment. Urgency Indicators also display how serious the problem is. Arrow pointing to green bar indicates the car’s computer is not reporting a problem, and the Smart Scan has the ability to turn off the “Check Engine” light. Arrow pointing to yellow bar indicates the car should be looked at in the next five days. Arrow pointing to amber bar indicates a mechanic should see the car soon before further damage can occur. Arrow pointing to red bar indicates an immediate repair is needed. Catch minor problems before they become big – and expensive. Visit a mechanic armed with knowledge about what is wrong, including which parts might be affected, and don’t be charged for unnecessary repairs. If buying a used car, evaluate the overall condition of the car before purchasing.

 "B & D Code Scanner" 2009-12-01
By Robert W. Greenameyer (Arizona)
The check engine light had been on for over 4 years on my 1997 Ford Ranger. Nobody would help me. When I took it to emission "specialists", I think they just turned it off and charged me over $200.00 for "fixing" it. Several times!. Well, the light would come back on within a day. Finally I bought the AD925 scanner from Amazon. It told me immediately what the trouble code was. It was a code specific to Ford products and didn't show up in the book that cam with the scanner. I checked on the internet and found out what it meant. I changed the purge valve and solenoid (very easy). The light went off and stayed off. Now I can get my new tags.

The scanner came very quickly. Within a couple days. It was packaged very nicely and works perfectly. Obviously brand new. I give it my highest rating.

 "Works great" 2009-11-12
By Wayward Traveller (Pullman WA)
I had a check engine light come on in my Kia about 60 miles from home.

Of course it was at a gas station and nothing had changed. I had taken the car in for maintenance the week before so I thought maybe the dealer had done something.

Or that it might have been a leak in the gas cap.

Well the dealer, also the one I got my brand new Camry SE from wanted $89 to diagnose it and if it was something they had done it would be free of charge.

Well rather than pay that I picked this up on gold box of the day for like $35.00

Hooked it up, it told me the code within seconds.

Looked up the code, and sure enough fuel system leak was causing the error.

Reset the check engine light, never had another problem.

And that was 3 months ago.

Unit paid for itself right then and there in 30 seconds.

I only need one of these about once every 5 years or so, but it already paid for itself first time out.

"Good product at a good price" 2009-10-01
By WryGuy2 (Arlington, VA)
I purchased the Black & Decker AD925 Smart Scan Automotive Check Engine Light Diagnostic Tool through Amazon as part of a gold box deal [...]. Since my local garage charges over $100 just to do a diagnostic scan (!), and I seem to be averaging a warning light or two a year, this tool has the potential to save me significant money by letting me know how serious the problem is and if it's something I can fix myself.

I ordered the tool right after a warning light appeared in my car, and it was delivered very promptly. I tried it on my car and it works as advertised. However, for some reason, I got an error code about half the time when I plugged the tool into the port in my car. Unplugging and replugging the tool solved the problem, though. Hopefully this isn't an early sign of a future problem with the tool. I also wouldn't have minded if the tool's cable were about a foot or so longer.

I also like the fact that if the problem is something you can fix (or is even a non-existant problem), you can use the tool to erase the error code from the car. While the tool doesn't have a lot of bells and whistles, it does what it says for a reasonable price.

It is a great tool for what it does. It is very simple and compact and light. It will flash the light on the dash and give you a flashing code that you look up but you might be surprised to know that all you really need is a paper clip and the knowledge of which 2 pins in the OBD1 connector to short together and you will save money. Please be sure you know which 2 pins before you try anything maybe even if you have a technician that you know or go to could give you some incite but they might not. The pins that must touch for engine codes are A and B. For ABS(anti-lock braking system) you must touch pins A and H. Hope this helps you in your diagnosis.

"Seems to be a great product.... but..." 2010-03-19
By ZoneIII (USA)

Please see the note at the end of my review to learn about a potential problem with this scanner that I discovered after I originally posted this review).

I just received the scanner yesterday so I haven't been able to use it extensively yet but my first impressions are very positive. It is well constructed and a bit larger than it appeared to me in pictures and videos. The cables are very high-quality and the screen is large, clear, and bright. Although I have done virtually all of my own car repairs since the late 1960s, I simply have not had a real need for a code scanner. Contrary to popular myth, I never found modern cars to be difficult to work on at all. In fact, they are easier to work on in many ways. However, when problems involve electronics, a car's on-board computer system, sensors, etc., special tools are needed for efficient diagnosis. Fortunately, I have never had a problem that I couldn't fix without the use of a scanner although I have pulsed out a code or two using a paper clip in the past. I have found the electronics to be extremely dependable on modern cars. That said, the MIL (Check Engine) light went on last week and that's when I decided that it was time to get a scanner. However, I cleared the code by momentarily disconnecting the battery and the MIL light has not come back on so it must have been a fluke. (I hadn't decided to buy a scanner at that point; if I had, I would not have cleared the code and I could have read it when I did get the scanner.)

This scanner has rather advanced features that may only be useful for experienced mechanics like myself. For that reason, I would suggest that someone buy a simpler scanner if all they want to do is retrieve the trouble codes (DTCs). Once you know the code, it's a simple matter to research it on the Internet or using the shop service manual. In fact, you will need the service manual to do more specific diagnosis in many cases even with the scanner. (I buy a factory service manual for every car I own.) But someone who does not do their own repairs is unlikely to have the expensive service manuals anyway. Again, if you just want to retrieve DTCs for further research into the problem or to give to a shop that will do the actual repair(s), you would do well to buy a simpler and less expensive scanner because you will almost certainly never need and may not even understand some of the information this scanner can retrieve. Also, with a simpler scanner, you won't have to worry about all the other features that this scanner has that can be confusing if you don't use them frequently. Very simple scanners require no manual at all but give you the most important info that you need - the DTCs.

The manual is well written but has a lot of information so you will have to refer to it if you only use the scanner occasionally or when using more advanced features. I would suggest that you download the PDF version of the manual from the manufacturer's site to keep just in case you lose the hard copy manual. In fact, I download the manual for all things that I buy that require a manual and that has come in very handy.

In actual use, the scanner is very easy to use once you understand it's operation although you will probably forget some of the more advanced procedures. I plugged it in and pressed the correct button and, in a few seconds, it told me that no DTCs were present. I then played around with live data, etc., and it worked very well. If you are just reading DTCs, it is very easy to use but then you really don't need a scanner with this many features.

The case that comes with the unit is a very nice soft case although it would have been better if it came with a blow-molded case that allowed you to store the cables in another compartment so the connectors don't scratch the scanner. But that's a small point. Again, the soft case is very nice.

I only have a couple very minor complaints so far and one of them has nothing to do with the tool itself. I used Amazon's free shipping option and, to my delight, the scanner arrived much sooner than their system said it would be delivered. I received it in three or four days. However, the packing wasn't ideal. The scanner itself comes in a very nice box that I almost hate to throw away but it was placed in a larger shipping box with no packing material in it so the inner box could bounce around in the outer box. That's not good for electronic devices, of course. Fortunately , no damage was done. My other complaint is one that others have mentioned in their reviews - that is, that the scanner comes with an archaic parallel connector on the PC end of the PC cable. Luckily, I happen to have a parallel port on my old PC but many people don't. Of course, you can buy a parallel to USB adapter cable but it's unfortunate that the scanner doesn't have a USB cable or at least include the adapter cable with the scanner. On the other hand, you may not want to connect it to your PC anyway. I did load up the software that comes with the scanner and it appears that it may be helpful but I don't think it's absolutely necessary to get good service from the scanner. That brings me to one last point: I have read in other reviews that you can get firmware updates from the manufacturer's site when the scanner is connected to your PC but I have been unable to find anything about those updates on the website. I do, however, see that I can upgrade the tool so it reads some ABS codes but that's another thing. At this point, I'm not sure if you can get non-ABS updates or not. I will contact the manufacturer about that. It would make sense to be able to get such updates, though, because I would imagine that new cars may have new manufacturer specific codes from time to time and the scanner should "know" about those codes.

All-in-all, I think it's a fine tool that will be of most value to the professional or experienced home mechanic. It won't do what extremely expensive scanners will do but it will do more than most people will require. It seems to be a very good value for someone like myself and that's why I chose it after researching many different scanners.

NOTE: I am adding this note several weeks after my original review because I found a problem with the scanner which other owners should be aware of and also because of what I believe to be poor customer support from the manufacturer. The button (green) that turns the scanner on and off is supposed to have to be pressed for several seconds to turn it on. That makes sense because that would help to prevent turning it on by accident. However, the button turns on instantly at the slightest touch and it is not recessed into the housing to prevent it being accidentally turned on. That's a problem because it can (and will) be turned on just from handling the soft case normally. It really does turn on inadvertently too. Even if you put the scanner face down in the case, it may still turn on just from the button touching the back of the case. It did for me. I don't know if this is a defect with my specific scanner or not but you may want to check yours out. I found my scanner turned on in the case several times after I had zipped it up and opened it again. For that reason, I'm going to store it with the batteries removed. One other thing that may be of interest to potential buyers of this product: I filled out the proper online technical support form at the manufacturer's website to ask about the button problem and also to ask if there are firmware updates available for the scanner (I do have their software installed on my PC.) I know there is an Anti-lock brake UPGRADE available, but some of the material at the manufacturer's website and also in reviews here suggest that you may be able to download firmware updates to the tool as well. However, I couldn't find any option to do that at the website so I asked technical support if firmware updates are available and, if so, how I would get them. Unfortunately, they never bothered to respond to my questions. In fact, they didn't even bother to acknowledge receiving them even though I filled out the proper online technical support form. For that reason, and also because of the button problem, I have changed my rating from five stars to four stars. It's not a good sign when a company does not bother to respond to customers.

This thing works great and tells you instantly if your vehicle will pass an emission test, plus retrieving codes and live data is a snap and easy to read. You need to be a mechanic or mechanically inclined to use the information given, but you can definitely save on the diagnostic fee that the shops charge. This thing can be upgraded to read ABS codes for $99. If you buy the USB to serial adapter, it connects to a computer well. This was definitely the best price.

I found this scanner easy to use. It came with a detailed instruction book on how to set up and use the product. It also has an extensive list of error codes to help with troubleshooting the problem. The ability to erase the error code was especially helpful. There was also a CD included which allowed you to set up a file for your car on a computer to catalog the codes and keep track of the repair work done to resolve the issue. Came with a nice carrying case which helps keep all the cables and scanner protected and stored together.
