 "Equus 3140" 2010-02-22
By Bud 229 (Gladstone, Michigan)
I bought the Equus 3140 and it works very good I pluged it into my 1992 Ford F150 and it told me the the thermostat was bad so I replaced it I can tell the difference when I have the heater on in the truck it's a lout warmer then it use to be the thermostat hasn't been replaced in a lout of years.

I would recommend this Code Scanner to anybody.

Also you can update this scanner on the internet that way if I get a new truck at least I know it will update for that year.

The only thing they need to add to this code scanner is the ABS Brake scan but other then that it's a very good tool.

"Great scan tool for any D.I.Y" 2010-02-20
By C. Williams (North Carolina United States)
I have not used this on any OBD1 vehicles yet. I can't review that part of this tool. The OBD2 part is great. I talk to a mechanic before a bought this. I ask him what he would recommend and he said anything with live data and he ask me how much I was gonna to spend and I told him around two or three hundred. He than told me that I was on the right track. He also said never replace any part based on a DTC code. That just points you in the right direction. You then use the live data part of the tool to dig deeper to the problem. This does take skill he said. I would have to play with the tool to learn more about it and how to use it.

With that said this is a great tool for the money and for anyone who just want's to know what's going on with th'er car. I shoped around about 6 months. If I'm going to sink 2 or 3 hundred dollors into a tool I was going to find one that a mechanic recommeded and something that was easy to use. Some stores had this same tool for a much higher price others had th'er name on it with a hard case the same scan tool and everything. Whats in a case I'm putting this in my tool box.

For the bad reviews. It sounded like they were looking for a mechanic in a box. (Just hook up the tool, find out what DTC code turned the light on, replace what the code reads that simple) Nope it's harder than that. All you know at this point is what code turn the light on and what may have caused it and if you know how to read the live data then you should be able to fix it. If your still stuck and need to take take your car to the shop, you know about whats wrong. You can tell the mechanic you know something. Besides my check engine light is on.

"Beware if you want this for ODB 1" 2010-02-12
By D. Griffin (IL)
The description indicates it works with popular 1995 GM vehicles. The box it comes in even says it works with 1995 GM trucks under one ton. It does NOT work with under one ton 1995 GM "S" series trucks. This tidbit is disclosed on about page 100 in the manual. It might be a good tool with the right car. Don't know.

By M. johnson (Va.)
I purchased my unit back in December. So far i am very impressed. It worked on my 92 4x4 toyota pickup truck it let me know that my 02 sensor was bad. Also i used it on a 2003 nissan altima it had a bad thermostat. When purchasing it i read alot of information and reviews online. I was concern about my 95 oldsmobile royale because from what i read online it wouldn't work on that because of the climate controll. Which was true it didn't work but i wasn't surprise because i had already did my homework. Now you still have to be open minded just because it says one thing is bad sometimes you have to back things up just to find out what other things are inline with the sensor. But this tool will get you in the area and sometime you may have to go a step or two further. So overall for me it does the job and awhole lot more.

"Simple scanner but packs a punch for the price" 2010-01-08
By Ron
I bought this as a simple replacement for my older Actron Pocketscan scanner that was on the fritz. This device does everything that device did and much quicker in terms of reading codes and deleting them. It is a great device to keep handy in your vehicle for reading codes. You can then search on any website or car forum and you will find out what the code means. You could pay considerably more for the same type of scanner to do the same exact thing, read codes and delete them, but why do that. This is without a doubt one of the best values for a any motorist out there.

 "Works okay." 2009-06-12
By XRing (MASS, USA)
Got this for a relative who owns a 2002 Toyota Echo.

After a Boston area garage ripped her off for a fuel pump, O2 sensors

etc etc (About $1,000), I read the codes and found out she had a dirty MAS sensor. (The sensor wires were thickly coated with gunk)!

After I cleaned it, the car started running much better (no more stalling) and getting fantastic MPG.. "Just like when it was new".

Cleaning the Echo MAS is a very easy DIY job. Instructions on the web.

Even with a new gas cap, she is still getting the P0440 Evaporative Emission Control System Malfunction, almost every time she gets a fill up.

So, now she can quickly read and re-set the 0440 code and have her car ready for it's yearly state inspection.

(She just has to wait a week after resetting before getting inspected).

I've read that it's very common for the Echo to throw Emission Control System error codes, with 0440 being at the top of the list.

Cheers,

Rich

 "well worth it" 2010-01-30
By Peter L. Ward
the Actron CP9175 is well worth the money. Here's my story - I have a 1998 F150 and my check engine light kept coming on. My brother has an auto scanner from Sears, an Innova which is ok but they say if you have to borrow somthing more than 3 times you should have one of your own. I payed $80.00 on Amazon. What a deal! I plugged it in to my Ford and it automatically found the problem. Now this is where people get discouraged. It gave a 0442 code-small leak in Evapor-so I went to my computor and typed in that code. Up popped a web site called OBD#2 trouble code site. Awesome! A Free trouble code site that tells you from the most common problems to the least common problems with lengthy/detailed explanations. Turned out to be my gas cap rubber gasket so I just wiped it down and that fixed it.

I do recommend this product. It's the best auto scanner on the market in this price range.

I purchased this to check my vehicle after the check engine lite came on. I'm not an mechanic, but I do like to make repairs on my vehicle if I can. Once I received the device, I installed a 9 volt battety, plugged the device in and in less than 5 minutes, I was done. The device scanned the vehicle and determined cylinder 5 was misfiring. I changed my plugs and wires, did a check with the device again and no other issue were found. I would recommend this product to anyone willing to save money on vehicle repairs, is somewhat handy with tools, is an individual with basic knowledge of vehicle repairs, or a seasoned mechanic...

"Easy to use - works well - but be aware" 2010-02-27
By HOMEWORK (California)
I bought this product to clear the fault codes on my 2001 Audi A4 so that it could pass inspection. The device is extremely easy to use. For the Audi, I didn't even have to turn on the ignition as instructed. The device immediately powered on upon connecting to the port, and within 30 seconds, I had the three faults cleared. However (and that's a BIG HOWEVER), the device WILL NOT "reset" the monitors, which is also a requirement (at least in CA) to pass inspection. The monitors can also be considered "sensors" which measure and detect malfunctions. I had to drive my car about 20-30 miles for a couple days more before all "monitors" reset. You know when the monitors have reset, because this device's green light will illuminate and the monitor indicators cease to blink. In my research, none of the devices reset the monitors. Great device for the money.

 "Equus 3030" 2010-02-11
By J. Emerson (Chicago)
I bought the Equus 3030 a month ago. My check engine light inconveniently came on the month I needed to get an emissions test. In my state, if your check engine light is illuminated, you automatically fail the test. I bought the 3030 to help diagnose the problem. The 3030 seemed to have the best reviews for the lowest price and the most options. This tool gives you the standard obd2 codes as well as manufacturer specific codes. It gives you the option to clear the codes. And it has some nice software that lets you print up a report and document the situation when your light came on. BE WARNED: Code readers will NOT tell you exactly what component failed on your car! The codes indicate which systems need attention. These systems typically have several components. The software and website will steer you toward the common reasons for failures of these systems. If your problem is not chronic, this tool can clear the code and turn off your check engine light. This reader also has the nice extra of having a three indicator light system that lets you know if your car is ready to pass the emissions test. It show green for "ready to pass"; yellow for an "inconclusive test"; and red for "your car is going to blow up, get it to the shop immediately". Once you clear the code, your car will have to run through several preprogramed tests (different for every manufacturer) before it gives you the green light for the emissions test. If you clear the code on your way to the emissions test, there is a good chance that the test will be inconclusive. It took me a few short trips to the store to pass these tests.

The device is easy to use: 1) turn your key to the 'on' position. 2) plug in the reader to the port (usually around the driver's knee area). 3)Read code(s). 4) Look up codes in instruction book or online. 5) Determine the severity of the problem code and erase as you feel comfortable, or take it to the shop for repairs. Even if you have to take it to the shop, this tool give you a heads up on what the repairs may entail.

There a lot more sofisticated tools that diagnose more systems and give you more options. But this tool is easy to use and has a friendly price. Some autoparts stores offer to read the codes for freee. Most repair shops will charge you $50-$200 for the same service. For me, it nice to have the 3030, so I can pass the emissions test. As a bonus, I don't freak out every time my gas cap wasn't screwed on tight. GOOD BUY!

Shame on me. I should have read and believed some of the previous reviewers who had problems using this with their Subaru. It did not work on my 03 Subaru Forester. After connecting properly, it simply indicated 'error.' I had assumed from some reviews and other notes on the Web that this same model now had a different chip that worked with Subarus--not true. Had it worked, this model would have offered so much more for the price over an Actron. But I guess I will have to try an Actron now.

Used it to check the code for a 2004 Honda Civic check-engine light. Nice to know what the error is before you take it into a shop, so you know to expect a large or small bill, or if it's something you can do yourself. Code index that the unit comes with may not provide all the details you need for your specific car, however. It's best to be used with the complete code index with a service manual.

 "Does the Job" 2010-02-11
By R. Lewis (Batimore, MD)
A check engine light caused me to order the OBD II scanner. I've had three check engine lights in the past year and each problem has been relatively minor, but the labor has been, on average, about $80 each time. On the third time, I decided to check the code and see if I could find the problem myself. I could have gone to one of the auto parts places (Autozone, Advanced, etc.) and had it read, but the closest is 11 mi away (22 miles round trip), so for just $35, I justified buying it. I read the code and then went on line to see if anyone else had experienced the same problem. Sure enough, the fix was there. I bought the part from the dealer for $23, put it in, used the OBD II to clear the code and re-ran the test. Everything was fine. I couldn't be more pleased.

By rockin24 (The O.C. in CA)
I have used this for over a year and a half now and have not had a problem with it. It reads the codes including P which some other reviewer could not seem to get it to do. The problem I had with my car was a stuck open thermostat so the light would come on every 2 or 3 days. I was easily able to retrieve the code, verify it was still the same problem, and erase it to turn off the light for over a year till I finally got the thermostat replaced. The light has lit up for other codes too, so I could check the problem before taking it to the mechanic to make sure he was telling me the truth.

"Not the fanciest but works well for amateurs" 2009-07-24
By Ronny Ong (Dallas, TX USA)
Sure, many auto parts stores will read your codes for free, but you have to drive there during their hours and wait for someone to become available. It's like making prints of digital photos. Sure, Wal-Mart will do it for pennies, but it's not that expensive to own your own photo printer. When I saw how affordable this reader was, I couldn't think of a good reason not to own one.

I only have one car and I'm not the type who is likely to do any repairs myself other than changing bulbs, fuses, filters, wiper blades, etc. Therefore, I wasn't interested in spending more to get a code reader with fancier display, more buttons, or wider compatibility. I just wanted to be able to see the error codes and look them up so I would have some idea of what was going on BEFORE I started dealing with mechanics.

At first, I was completely ignorant about where to find my OBD II socket. The instructions give you some guidelines on where to look, but the exact location can vary by make, model, and year. It took me about 15 minutes with a flashlight to find it, not for any particular reason except my ignorance. It wasn't really hidden nor difficult to see; I had just never seen one before in my life. Once located, it was a piece of cake to follow the instructions for connecting the reader and scrolling thru the codes. Although the instructions give you a brief description of common codes, it only took a few minutes with Google for me to seem like an expert about my problem. When I called the dealership to schedule a service appointment, I was able to tell them enough information that they were able to confirm coverage under my extended warranty, verify that all the relevant parts were in stock, and have me bring it in at a time when they would well-staffed for the type of repair. (In larger service departments, some mechanics are stronger in certain areas, so if you have a transmission problem, it's best not to show up on the day when the transmission specialist is off.)

If you're worried this thing might be hard for a non-mechanic to use, you can stop worrying. If I could figure it out, anyone can. This product has worked so well, I almost regret that my car has been working so well that I rarely get to use my code reader.
